Meet the Captains

Captain Marty’s journey began on the waters of Lake Superior, where he learned the ropes of fishing from his grandfather and uncles as part of their family business, Happy Hooker Charters, founded in 1976. Summers were spent as a first mate, learning not just the technical skills of fishing but also the importance of excellent customer service. By 2014, Marty had become a licensed USCG captain, guiding Happy Hooker IV and continuing the family tradition.

Marty’s love for fishing didn’t end with summer. Starting in the 1990s, he and his father would head to Lake of the Woods each winter in search of walleye and sauger. Today, he carries that same enthusiasm into his work, ensuring every guest at Lake of the Woods Sleepers has a memorable and successful fishing experience.

Captain Nathan brings complementary skills to the partnership. Captain Nathan grew up in the southwest corner of MN where they’re known more for their cornfields and soybeans than their lakes… However, after Nathan moved to Duluth in 2001, he quickly discovered his passion for fishing.

Wanting to keep fishing throughout the year, Nathan knew he would need to transition from “Sea” Captain to Ice Fishing Guide each winter, but after his first child was born, he knew ice fishing would require a nice warm ice house to accommodate his then toddler, Lucas. Nathan, being a skilled carpenter, knew just how he wanted to build them. “I want them to be awesome”. Lots of thought and planning led to the design and layout of their fish houses.

Together, these two captains combine decades of experience, offering unparalleled guidance year-round.
